Peninsula Enterprise November 19, 1904: Obituary for Dr. James Poulson
Deaths
Dr. James Poulson died at his home, "Cokesbury", on Onancock creek
last Monday night from acute infection of the throat. He was 65 years
of age and one of the most highly thought of citizens in the vicinity.
Dr. Poulson was an ex-Confederate soldier having gone to Richmond at the
outbreak of the Civil war, and became a member of that famous company,
the “Richmond Blues”. He served during the war with great gallantry and
was once wounded in the arm. While the deceased never took any
active part in politics he was always an ardent Democrat of the old school.
His study of medicine was interrupted by the Civil war but afterwards concluded
when he went to the state of Texas to practice. He remained there some
years before his return to the Shore. He was never married and is the last male
member of one of the oldest and best families on the Shore and has for some
years resided with his sisters – Misses Bettie, Mary and Sarah Poulson and
Mrs. Charlotte Taylor – all of whom survive him. The deceased was a member
of the Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church and the funeral took place from
the home Wednesday afternoon Rev. Peter B. Henderlite, officiating. The
interment was in the old family burying ground.
